COURT FINDS FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER NOT GUILTY OF FRAUD ALLEGATIONS.

On Jan 31st 2012 a court ruled that the former speaker of the house of Reps Dimeji Bankole and his Deputy Usman Nafada were not guilty of fraud charges levied against them since their arrest in June 2011.

The arrest of both men which made headlines back then was for the alleged misappropriation of funds summing to tens of billions of naira.

The speaker was accused of using the government accounts to source a loan worth N10b which was allegedly used to increase law makers allowances and salaries. But upon Bankole's ability to prove that the loan really did exist and used only to increase law makers salary, Justice Suleiman Belgore of the Abuja high court dismissed the charges against him stating that although the motive behind the loan was immoral, the former speaker had committed no crime.
