A Zimbabwean man has appeared in court for joking in a bar about whether President Robert Mugabe was strong enough to blow up the balloons for his 88th birthday party last week, his lawyer said. Richmore Chazi was arrested while drinking with friends in a bar in Mutare while watching the live coverage of Mugabe's birthday rally held in the eastern city on Saturday. "Chazi is being charged for insulting and undermining the authority of the president and will come back to court on March 12 for routine remand," his lawyer Blessing Nyamaropa told AFP. He has been released on $20 bail when he appeared in court on Monday. Zimbabwe police regularly arrest people who joke about Mugabe, who has ruled the country since independence from Britain in 1980.

A gang of armed robbers was reported to have invaded Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State and attacked two commercial banks located within the premises of the private university on Wednesday. The affected banks were Wema and Zenith Banks Plc. The incident was said to have sent panic among students as well as academic and non-teaching staff of the institution who scampered for safety while the operation lasted. It was gathered that the bandits, numbering seven, arrived the university in a green Nissan Quest car and shot sporadically into the air to scare away people. The robbers were said to have succeeded in gaining entrance into the Wema Bank and eventually carted away undisclosed amount of money from the vaults. Veteran actor James Iroha aka Gringory Akabogu has died at 69. The actor, who was 69 in September 2011, died on Tuesday, although the circumstances and place of his death are unclear. Before his death, Gringory was living in abject poverty and cried out in vain for rehabilitation. He was said to be suffering from an eye ailment. His son, Akwari James Iroha, confirmed Gringory's death in a post on Facebook. He wrote, "Sept 1942 _ Feb 2012. A 17-year-old HIV positive maid from Mupandawana, Zimbabwe, laced the porridge of her employer's four-year-old child with menstrual blood. This was revealed in court where the maid's cruelty earned her a 10-year prison term on Friday. She will effectively serve eight years as two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour. The maid "Pelagia Mureya", carried out the disgusting act several times until luck ran out for her when one day her employer, last week noticed a drop of blood when her child was eating porridge and investigated. The maid professed ignorance of the blood but her inquisitive employer took the porridge, her child and the maid to a local Hospital where tests confirmed it was Mureya's menstrual blood. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the establishment of five additional private universities to promote quality university education in the country. The Minister of Education, Professor Rukayyat Rufa'i, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly FEC meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, at Presidential Villa, Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the council had in 2011 approved provisional licenses for the establishment of four private universities. No fewer that 18 universities have so far been established across the country by the President Goodluck Jonathan's led administration. They include nine public and nine private universities. Rufa'I said that prior to the approval of the five additional private universities, the country had 117 universities, serving the over 150 million Nigerians. Gunmen believed to be members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram on Monday afternoon stormed the fish section of Baga market and sprayed stallholders and vendors with bullets, traders said. People at the market said they believe the attack on Monday came because traders helped to apprehend an armed boko haram member who was handed over to security agencies and later killed.
