The Federal Government and GE Energy during the weekend, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a 10 billion dollar investment in various power plants which would have a combined capacity of 10,000Megawatts, MW. Nigeria's Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, insisted that the cost had not been padded or inflated in any way, as globally, it costs $100 million to generate 1,000MW of electricity. He said this in a bid to dis-abuse the belief that there is a conspiracy to inflate the cost of providing this 10,000Megawatts as ealier reported in some journals.

PEST Control Association of Nigeria, PECAN, said recently that no fewer than 3,000 Nigerians die annually from Lassa fever. According to the association, "this statistics is alarming, especially when we realize that a total of 5,000 people die annually from the disease in West Africa." and Nigeria has more than one-third of that figure. Mr. Ayo Ogunyedeka, President, PECAN, said Lassa fever is an acute viral infection caused by the Lassa virus, caused by rats that could be found anywhere. He said the virus was first discovered in 1969 in Lassa in Borno State, which lent it the name lassa fever. According to him, "the virus lives in rats and infects human beings when they come in contact with rats droppings, urine and food contaminated with them, and saliva of rodents. He stated that the rate of the sickness is higher during the dry season because rats are mammals and roam around freely during this period." PUNCH - A labourer, Matthew Adesuyi, was crushed to death while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a building, being refurbished, collapsed on the premises of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited on FIRRO Road, Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos. PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims were labourers hired to work on the one-storey building. One of the labourers, who identified himself simply as Sodiq, said the incident occurred around 8:30am on Thursday. He said, "We are over 70 labourers hired to refurbish the building. Most of my colleagues had gone out to have breakfast but I remained in the building, on the ground floor, when it trembled. "I immediately beckoned to my colleagues who were on the first floor but the building quickly collapsed. "One of them managed to jump off but sustained some injuries while the other lost four fingers of his right hand when the building collapsed." A pair of six-month-old conjoined twins who were connected at the stomach, sternum and liver have died in Madagascar two days after a marathon surgery to separate them, their doctor said Friday. "We did everything we could, but unfortunately there were constraints beyond our control," said Mamy Lalatiana Andriamanarivo, chief of paediatric surgery at the hospital that conducted the operation. They died of cardio-pulmonary failure 48 hours after their separation, he said. "Our equipment was inadequate for dealing with unforeseen circumstances," he added. The bodies have been returned to their village of Talata Vohimena, in the country's south. Conjoined twins are an extremely rare phenomenon -- with an estimated one for every 200,000 births. However, in some areas of Madagascar, the number of conjoined twins is higher, and the country has seen three declared cases since 2010. A 24-year old man, Wasiu Salami has been arrested and charged before Apapa Magistrates' court in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria for allegedly battering a sex worker in a hotel for refusing to offer him sex for N200. He is now facing a one count charge of assault against the victim before the presiding Magistrate Mrs A. K. Shonubi. Salami, who was remanded in custody, allegedly assaulted Aishat Clement at Golden Gate Hotel, Ojo Road, Ajegunle, Lagos because she refused the N200 he offered her. P.M.NEWS gathered from Salami that he was a regular customer to Aishat and was shocked she refused his request. He said he didn't have enough money that night and pleaded with her to accept the offer, only for her to abuse him. Workers in Oyo State have warned that there will be no industrial peace in the state unless the state government implements the new N18,000 minimum wage. The workers, at their congress held in Ibadan on Friday, apart from passing a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the three labour unions in the state, rejected the salary time-table released by the state government on the implementation of the minimum wage.
